About Counselling & Psychotherapy – what it does, who it is for

The aim of counselling and psychotherapy is to provide an opportunity to work towards living in a more satisfying, fulfilling and resourceful way. People often seek professional help when distressed or concerned by particular problems or when they are experiencing a general sense of unease and lack of fulfilment in their lives. For example, issues concerning:

Relationships difficulties and problems
Anxiety
Depression
Stress
Bereavement
Sexuality
Identity Problems
Sexual Identity
Trauma
Creative Blocks
Sexual Problems
Work Dissatisfaction
Addictions of various kinds
Eating disorders
A sense that life could be of a better quality

All counselling and psychotherapy is totally private and confidential.

Counselling is often a more short-term intervention of between 10 to 30 sessions. It tends to focus on one or two specific problems that currently make life stressful. Counselling aims to be helpful by increasing a sense of independence and raising awareness of difficult issue. It helps people make better decisions. Psychotherapy looks in more depth to see if there are unconscious issues from the past that are influencing present life.

In addition to this, psychotherapy provides a professional relationship in which difficult or painful experiences and emotions can be explored. It attempts to raise the individual’s awareness of often unconscious emotions, thoughts and fantasies that may influence past and present relationships and points out how they might be resolved. Psychotherapy aims for depth change to deep-seated emotional issues and development. By increasing insight, it attempts to increase the individual’s ability to make meaningful choices and decisions in life and seeks to promote individual self -determination and autonomy.

Such emotional problems often reproduce themselves and are reflected in the relationship with the therapist. The therapy process thereby helps the client to identify these patterns. By becoming conscious of them he or she is more able to change through understanding.
